Bluetooth earbuds are used to listen to music and make calls. They connect with your phone through Bluetooth. When a call comes in while you’re listening to music, the earbuds automatically switch to call audio. After the call ends, the music usually resumes automatically.
A weak Bluetooth connection is one of the common reasons earbuds disconnect during calls. When the earbuds switch to call audio, the connection can sometimes become unstable. This can cause the sound to break or the earbuds to disconnect.
To keep the Bluetooth connection stable, keep your phone and earbuds within Bluetooth range so they can maintain a strong signal. If a firmware or software update is available, install it because outdated software can cause connection problems. Then reconnect your earbuds to refresh the Bluetooth connection.
To find the root of the problem, first check whether it is coming from your phone or the earbuds. Connect the earbuds to another available device and make a test call. If the same problem happens there, the issue may be with the earbuds. If the call works normally, the issue is with your phone.
If you have already tried these steps and your earbuds still disconnect during calls, try the other fixes below. They may help fix the problem.
Why Do Bluetooth Earbuds Disconnect During Calls?
This problem can happen for several reasons. Low battery, a weak Bluetooth signal, too much distance between your phone and the earbuds, Bluetooth profile switching errors, outdated firmware, battery-saving settings, or hardware problems can all cause call disconnects or broken audio. If it only happens during WhatsApp, Zoom, or other internet calls, a weak internet connection can also be the reason.
Bluetooth Profile Switching (A2DP and HFP)
Your earbuds use one Bluetooth profile for music and another for calls. When you answer a call, your phone switches from A2DP to HFP. If this switch fails or takes longer than expected, the call audio may start breaking or the earbuds may disconnect.
Battery Optimization
Some Android phones limit background activity to save battery. If your calling app is restricted, the Bluetooth connection may become unstable during a call and the audio may break or disconnect.
Outdated Firmware
Firmware controls how your earbuds work. If it is outdated, Bluetooth performance may become unstable, especially after a phone software update. This can affect call audio or the connection between your phone and the earbuds.
Low Battery
Low battery can also affect call stability. Think of it like a flashlight that becomes dim as the battery runs low. Earbuds can behave in a similar way. Since calls use both the speaker and microphone, they use more power than music playback. As the battery level drops, the audio may start breaking, or the connection may drop.
Additional Fixes
1. Disable Multipoint
Multipoint keeps your earbuds connected to two devices at the same time. A second connected device can sometimes interfere with audio when a call starts.
Open your earbuds’ companion app and look for Multipoint, Dual Connection, or a similar option. Turn it off and test a call. If your earbuds do not have an app, check the instructions for your specific model.
2. Pair the Earbuds Again
Saved Bluetooth pairing data can sometimes cause the earbuds to behave unexpectedly, especially after a phone software update.
Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings, select your earbuds, and choose Forget, Unpair, or Remove. Put the earbuds into pairing mode and connect them again.
3. Update the Earbuds’ Firmware
Older firmware can contain bugs that affect Bluetooth performance or call audio.
Open the app used to manage your earbuds and check for a firmware update. Keep the earbuds charged and follow the instructions shown by the app.
4. Turn Off Battery Restrictions for Calling Apps
Android can restrict background activity to save battery. This can sometimes affect calling apps while a call is active.
Go to Settings → Apps, select the calling app, and open its battery settings. Look for Battery, Background usage, or Battery optimization and remove restrictions if the option is available. The exact setting depends on your phone.
5. Check Call Audio Output
The earbuds can remain connected while the phone sends the call audio to its own speaker.
During a call, tap the Audio, Speaker, or Bluetooth option and select your earbuds.
6. Reset Network Settings
Saved Bluetooth or network settings can sometimes cause problems that remain even after you pair the earbuds again.
On Android, look under Settings → System → Reset options for the network or Bluetooth reset option. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so you will need to connect your devices again.
7. Factory Reset the Earbuds
A factory reset clears saved settings from the earbuds and can help when the issue continues after re-pairing.
The reset method depends on the model. Check your earbuds’ manual or official support instructions for the correct steps.
After resetting, pair the earbuds with your phone again and make a test call.
8. Contact the Manufacturer
If the earbuds still disconnect after trying these fixes, the problem may be related to the earbuds’ hardware, firmware, or a model-specific issue.
Contact the manufacturer’s official support and provide your earbud model, phone model, and details about when the disconnection happens.
Android Fixes
Android settings can vary between phone brands and software versions. Use these steps as general guidance and look for similar options on your device.
Samsung
Battery restrictions can stop calling apps from running properly in the background. Check battery settings and remove any restriction applied to your calling app.
If you use Galaxy Buds and calls drop while switching between two Samsung devices, turn off Auto switch in the Galaxy Wearable app and test the connection again. Samsung explains this feature in its official Galaxy Buds support guide.
Google Pixel
Allow your calling app to run in the background.
Go to Settings → Apps → See all apps → Calling app → App battery usage and enable background usage.
For Pixel Buds, check the Pixel Buds app for available firmware updates.
iPhone Fixes
Automatic Ear Detection
If AirPods disconnect or switch audio during calls, check Automatic Ear Detection.
Go to Settings → AirPods name → Automatic Ear Detection and turn it off temporarily to test the connection.
Call Audio Routing
During a call, open the audio options and select your earbuds instead of the iPhone speaker or receiver.
Reset Network Settings
If Bluetooth problems continue, reset network settings:
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
Apple provides more details about this reset process in its official iPhone settings guide
Software Update
Install the latest iOS update, as updates can include fixes for Bluetooth and connectivity problems.
Hardware Problems
If your earbuds were exposed to sweat, rain, or moisture beyond their official water-resistance rating, internal components may be affected. Water damage can cause random disconnects, charging issues, or unstable connections.
If the earbuds continue disconnecting on multiple devices after trying the recommended fixes, the issue may be related to a hardware fault. Contact the manufacturer for warranty or repair options.
Prevent Future Disconnects
- Keep your earbuds firmware updated through the manufacturer’s companion app.
- Install phone software updates when available, as they can include Bluetooth fixes.
- Clean the charging contacts on the earbuds and case regularly.
- Turn off multipoint when you do not need multiple device connections.
Troubleshooting Table
| Problem | Possible Cause | Best Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Audio drops when a call starts | Call audio switching issue | Re-pair earbuds and update firmware |
| Works with music but fails during calls | Call audio routing problem | Check the selected audio device during calls |
| Disconnects more when a laptop is nearby | Multipoint connection conflict | Disable multipoint |
| Call drops after a few minutes | Battery optimization restricting the app | Allow the calling app to run in the background |
| Random stuttering in crowded areas | Wireless interference | Move away from crowded wireless areas |
| Disconnects near low battery | Low battery issue | Charge earbuds and test again |
| Happens on every device | Possible hardware fault | Contact manufacturer support |
| Only one earbud disconnects | Charging contact or battery issue | Clean contacts and check charging |
