How to Fix Google Maps Showing Wrong Directions and Inaccurate Location

You open Google Maps to find your way, but it shows the wrong location. Instead of taking you through the road you are actually on, it sends you around another street or points you toward a road that is closed. Sometimes the route is much longer than it needs to be, and there is no clear U-turn or way to get back on the right road.

These issues usually come from GPS accuracy, location settings, compass calibration, or outdated road information.

Quick Fix

Before trying the fixes below, make sure Google Maps is updated to the latest version. An outdated app can cause bugs that affect location and navigation.

Turn on Wi-Fi: Keep Wi-Fi turned on even when you are not connected to a network. Your phone uses nearby Wi-Fi signals along with other location data to improve positioning.
Check location accuracy: On Android 12 and newer, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy and turn on Improve Location Accuracy. On older Android versions, the option may be under Settings > Location > Advanced > Location Accuracy. On iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select Google Maps, and turn on Precise Location.
Calibrate the compass: Tap the blue dot in Google Maps. If you see a Calibrate option, tap it and follow the instructions on the screen.
Clear the cache: On Android, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage > Clear cache. On iPhone, use Google Maps > Profile picture > Settings > About & terms > Clear application data only if other fixes do not help..
Restart your phone: Restart the phone and open Google Maps again to check the location.
Download an offline map: For areas with poor mobile coverage, download the map before you leave. In Google Maps, tap Profile picture > Offline maps and select the area you need.

Why Google Maps Gets Directions or Location Wrong

Google Maps uses GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, cell towers, and your phone’s sensors to work out where you are. GPS alone can usually locate you within about 20 meters, but accuracy can drop indoors or underground because satellite signals have trouble reaching your phone. If these signals are weak or unavailable, Google Maps may show your blue dot in the wrong place.

Several different problems can make Google Maps seem wrong, but each one points to a different cause:

The blue dot is in the wrong place: This usually means a GPS or location accuracy issue.
The blue dot is correct, but the arrow points the wrong way: This usually means the compass needs calibration.
Your location is correct, but Maps takes you to the wrong building or pin: The address or destination information may be wrong.
Your location and destination are correct, but the route uses a closed or incorrect road: The map data may be outdated.

Knowing the difference helps you choose the right fix. Changing GPS settings will not fix a road that Google Maps still shows incorrectly. If the road has changed but the map data is outdated, you need to report the change to Google instead.

Recalibrate Your Compass for Accurate Directions

When the blue dot is in the right place but the direction arrow points the wrong way, your phone’s compass may need calibration. Open Google Maps, tap the blue dot, and select Calibrate if the option appears. Move your phone in a figure-8 motion a few times until the beam becomes narrower and points in the direction you’re facing. Fix Google Maps Sending You to the Wrong Destination

Sometimes your location is correct, but Google Maps still takes you to the wrong building, the wrong end of a street, or a place that is difficult to recognize. This can happen because of an outdated pin, a duplicate listing, or an incorrect address. In other cases, the map takes you to the right spot, but the entrance is hard to find.

I experienced something similar while visiting Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for Umrah. The Google Maps location was correct, but I could not find the hotel. The sign above the entrance was covered with a curtain, the gate was small, and the nearby buildings made it difficult to recognize the place. The driver asked local people for help, and we found out that we were already standing at the correct location. The problem was not the GPS or the map pin, but finding the actual entrance.

Before starting your route, check the map preview, the address, and nearby landmarks. For places without a clear street address, such as a trailhead, a park entrance, or a specific building entrance, dropping a pin manually can be more useful than searching by address. Tap and hold the exact spot on the map, then use that pin for directions.

If a place or address is clearly wrong, you can report it through Google Maps. Open the place, scroll to the feedback option, and choose the relevant option, such as suggesting an edit or reporting incorrect information. Google reviews these reports, but changes may not appear immediately.

Fix “GPS Signal Lost” While Navigating

If your device shows “GPS Signal Lost” while navigating, it means your phone is having trouble receiving a usable signal from GPS satellites. This can happen in tunnels, parking garages, areas surrounded by tall buildings, or under heavy tree cover, where the satellite signal is weak or blocked. As a result, Google Maps may stop updating your location or show it inaccurately.

There is no setting that can restore a blocked satellite signal, but you can try a few steps if the connection does not return after you move into an open area. Turn Location off and back on, close and reopen Google Maps, or restart your phone.

Turn On Location Accuracy for Android and Precise Location on iPhone

Android

On Android, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy and turn on Improve Location Accuracy. On some phones, including Samsung devices, you may find this option under Settings > Location > Location Services > Google Location Accuracy. The menu names can vary by phone brand and Android version, so look for a similarly named option under Location settings if you do not see these paths.

iPhone

On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select Google Maps, and turn on Precise Location. Also, make sure Location Services is enabled and Google Maps has permission to access your location. Clear Google Maps Cache and Data to Fix Glitches

When old cache files build up, they can sometimes contribute to app errors or glitches. Clearing the cache removes these temporary files so Google Maps can create fresh ones. This may help resolve minor issues, but it will not fix every navigation problem.

On Android, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. On some phones, the menu may be called Storage, and the option may appear as Clear cache. Start with Clear cache, as it removes temporary files without resetting the app. Avoid tapping Clear storage or Clear data unless you are comfortable resetting the app’s local data.

On iPhone, open Google Maps, tap your profile picture > Settings > About & terms > Clear application data. This removes locally stored app data and resets the app’s cookies. Depending on the app version, you may need to sign in again or download offline maps again.

Update Google Play Services for Better Accuracy

On Android, Google Maps relies on Google Play services for several location-related features. If this background service is outdated, updating it may help resolve certain location or navigation issues.

Open the Google Play Store, search for Google Play services, and tap Update if the option is available. On supported devices, it usually updates automatically, so a manual check is mainly useful when an update is pending or a feature is not working as expected.

What to Do If Google Maps Shows the Wrong Road or a Closed Route

If Google Maps shows a missing, closed, or incorrectly marked road, you can report the issue to Google.

On Android or iPhone, open Google Maps, tap Contribute, and select Update road if the option is available. On a computer, click Menu > Edit the map > Add or fix a road, then follow the instructions to submit the correction. Google reviews submitted edits before applying them, so changes may not appear immediately. This editing feature is available only in some countries and regions.
